The Freshman boys basketball team played two games this week. First, they played against the Idaho Falls Tigers on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 and completely blew them out! They started out awesome with Madison getting the jump ball. Number 5 Bryce Dredge made an amazing 3-pointer. When asked for a quote, he stated, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Good advice, indeed.

Tanner Johnson got 1 foul shot and made it. With the end of the first quarter, Madison was ahead 14-9.  The whole team played great defense and offense. Carter Lerwill (#1) got 2 foul shots and made both.

An 8th grader at MJH, Mia Walsh, said, “After the first half I knew they were going to win! They took the lead and made a huge gap really fast."

In the third quarter, Hazen Torgensen hit a 3 in the middle of the half court line and also at the end of the third quarter, and they ended the quarter with the score 60-24.

Hazen Torgensen, a Freshman on the Basketball team, said, “I love to shoot the ball.”

They started the fourth quarter really well with Gabe Appleby swatting a layup! The whole Madison crowd was fired up! They played really well and beat the other team by 37 points! The end score was 71-34.

On Friday, December 17th, they boys took on a very highly ranked team from Draper, Utah. This team is a 6A team, according to assistant Coach, Aaron Lerwill, and is considered one of the top teams in the Salt Lake Valley. Even though Madison is only a 5A team, the coaches thought it would be a good experience for the two teams to play each other to give Madison a little challenge.

It started out as a close match, but Corner Canyon soon pulled ahead, and they stayed ahead for the rest of the game. It was a tough game playing against a skilled team from Utah.
Barkley, a 9th grader on the team said, "The team was all sophomores, so I think we actually did pretty good." They put up a good fight.

Torey Parker, an 8th grader at MJH said, “I liked watching them play; it was fun.” Sometimes it is fun to watch a game that is more balanced. This hasn't been the case lately with our freshmen boys because they usually win by so much!

The Corner Canyon team played really good defensively so we couldn’t put up a shot that would go in. We hustled in the first half, and then we kept getting more and more behind. A few three- pointers were made to keep us in the game for a while, but Corner Canyon ended up winning the game. The final score was 49- 71.
