Madison Gymnastics Centers competition season 2023
By: Lexi Packard

At the beginning of January, Madison Gymnastics Centers competitive girls team and boys team traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete at their first meet of the year ( the boys teams second meet). The competition was held at the Paris hotel. The event center was absolutely huge and intimidating. Both teams had a great time competing in gymnastics and spending their time in such a huge city. The girls and boys team placed well. The girls level 8 team placed first out of 18 teams! That was a huge win for us. We sent levels 4-9 to compete for the girls and levels 6-10 for the boys. Since then, the boys team has competed in Helena Montana and the girls team has competed in Woods Cross, Utah (at USA Gym World) and Pocatello, Idaho (Rumble in the Jungle).  Our teams have competed well this year and we are very excited to travel to Phoenix, Arizona for the Sun Devils Classic competition in a total of three weeks! The weekend after Arizona, Madison Gymnastics will be hosting their annual home meet at MHS called the Yellowstone Challenge. A couple weeks later we will be heading to the huge Idaho state competition to try and qualify for regionals, westerns, and nationals. Wish us good luck for these next couple weeks of training and competing!

Freshman girls basketball districts (1/28/23)
The girls basketball season ended on Saturday after the district tournament. The schools in our district are: Rigby, Highland, and Thunder Ridge. Rigby and Highland played and Madison and Thunder played. The winners of those two games would play in the championship.
Rigby beat Highland and made it to the championship. Madison got a commanding lead on Thunder right off the bat. Soon our lady bobcats had a double digit lead. At halftime our ladies were only up by around 6 though. The 2nd half we came out running. Very soon after the third quarter started it was a Madison game. The fourth quarter we were up by around 12 with only a couple of minutes left on the clock. Thunder started pressing full court. That didn’t faze the Bobcats though. They broke the press with ease and scored an easy layup. End of the game Madison won by around 11.

The next game was Rigby. The Rigby freshman girls team had an undefeated record and they were pretty confident coming into the game. In the first quarter they soon had a 10 point lead. In the 2nd quarter Madison started chipping down on that lead. A half court buzzer beater by Alyssa Clark right before halftime brought Rigby’s lead down to three.

The third quarter Rigby had a 5 point lead for most of it. With 3:24 on the clock the fire alarm went off! Since they didn’t know what had set it off they had to evacuate the gym and building. The game had about a 15 minute break and then they let everyone back in. Later it was discovered that it was a couple of little kids from Rigby that had pulled it. Something about the fire alarm changed the game. The game continued but it wasn’t Rigby’s game anymore as Madison slowly but surely started coming back. About halfway through the fourth Bobcats were down by 3. A couple more plays happened and then Camri Call hit a three to tie up the game. She banked another one in to gain the lead. Rigby responded to that with a bucket of their own. Then Brielle Nite in a very Kobe like manner hit a fadeaway jumper to bring Madison’s lead to two.

The gym was going crazy! With only around a minute and a half on the clock Rigby was frantic to keep their undefeated streak and win districts. Madison was working hard to break the streak and become the new district champs. Masey Johnson was playing some lockdown defense on the point guard trying to prevent a basket from being made. She was really getting in her head and got a couple of great stops for our team. Rigby missed a layup and Madison got the rebound which led to a timeout from the Bobcat coach. Back out on the floor with only 10 seconds left Torey Parker inbounded the ball to Camri Call who was then fouled to stop the clock. Madison was in the bonus though so Camri got to shoot free throws. She put the first one in increasing Madison’s lead to three. There were two seconds left as the second free throw was missed. Rigby ran to get the rebound but it was too late as the buzzer sounded and Madison became your new 9th grade girls basketball district champs! Final score: 43-40

Bobcats vs. Trojans
By: Camri Call
The game against our rivals did not end well for the bobcats. Our lady bobcats fought hard all the way to the end.
The beginning of the game started off with points being made pretty equally on both sides of the floor.  There were lots of shots that went up for Madison that didn’t fall. Throughout most of the 2nd quarter we were trailing by one point. A three pointer at the halftime buzzer for Rigby put them 4 points ahead.
The 2nd half went downhill pretty quickly for the Bobcats. The Trojans got hot and started draining some three’s that they had been missing earlier. Madison, while scoring every once and a while, continued to fall further and further behind.
The end of the 3rd quarter we were only down by a handful but at the beginning of the fourth quarter the lead got up to 9 and then 10. The Bobcats played their hearts out to the very end but fell short. Rigby won 48-36.

Girls Basketball @ Highland
By: Camri Call

Our girls basketball teams swept Highland yesterday night. They all won by double digits. Our Freshman girls won by a whole bunch. It was a great team win and they had everyone contributing to the score and to the play of the game.

The Bobcats scored the first bucket of the game right from the tipoff.  In the next couple of minutes the score was increased to 6-0. Madison kept building their lead throughout the first quarter. The end of the second quarter Rams scored a couple of baskets to get themselves established in the game. The end of the half, Madison was up by around 18 points.

Bobcats’ defense in the second half was a lot better. That was led by Ashlyn Porter who played some awesome defense throughout the game. The Bobcats continued to score a lot in transition, just beating the defense up the floor for quick layups. By the end of the game this led to us having a substantial lead. We won 56-21.

7th Grade Boys Basketball

On the 17th, the 7th grade boys played Mountain View! The game started and the Bobcats were winning by 18! Then in the second quarter, Mountain view started to catch up to us! The score was 28 to 30… we were losing! The second quarter was on and off. Both teams went back and forth with the lead. The end score was 62 to 55. We won!

Girls Basketball faces Pocatello

There was a home game last night against Pocatello. The freshman Bobcats took on the freshman Thunder. The first few possessions nobody scored and the score stayed at 0-0. Finally, Madison drove to the hoop and Camri Call scored the first points of the game. Pretty soon Madison was in double digits with Pocatello still scoreless. This changed after a few minutes though when the Thunder scored a layup. At halftime Bobcats were up by about 20 points.
The second half started out again with Madison going strong to the hoop. As Pocatello started falling farther and farther behind, the Bobcats were gaining momentum.  Brooklyn Heward had an awesome game and came up with multiple steals and layups through contact. This was very beneficial and allowed Madison to increase the lead and eventually win the game. The final score was 53-22.

Girls Basketball at Rigby

By: Camri Call

Our basketball girls played Rigby on Friday, January 6. The first quarter started off with a lot of back and forth baskets. They were a tough team but we were playing really well. By the end of the 2nd quarter however, Rigby was leading by 10. The score at halftime was 15-25.
The second half started out with Madison making a couple of baskets to cut the lead down again. We drained a three off an inbound play to cut it down to a three point lead.  Some poor defense on the other end though led to the lead increasing once again. We continued to score and cut down the lead throughout the rest of the third and into the fourth quarter but we never quite caught up. Eventually the Bobcats had to foul to stop the clock but Rigby hit their free throws making the lead even greater. The end of the game we were down and lost. Madison: 38 Rigby: 44.

Girls Basketball vs. Thunder Ridge

by Camri Call

The Freshman girls team took on Thunder in a very physical game. Right from the start there was lots of contact on defense and offense. Madison jumped to a quick lead at 5 to 0. Thunder soon made their way back when their posts hit a couple of shots.
By the second quarter Torey Parker was in foul trouble, already having gotten 3 fouls called on her. The second quarter was a lot of back and forth. Brielle Nite scored a layup right before the buzzer at halftime to tie up the game 20 to 20.
The second half started off even more physical than the first. Thunder scored a couple of quick layups right off the bat. They soon had an eight point lead. Madison wasn’t out of it yet though. They hit a couple of threes to get the game back within a few points.
With four points left in the fourth quarter Madison was down by a few. Thunder was now in the bonus so every time they were fouled they were at the line. They got fouled quite a bit and put down several free throws to increase their lead. Madison also got fouled but missed their free throws and that was enough to put Thunder on top when the final buzzer sounded. The final score was Thunder 45, Madison 38.

Junior HIgh Orchestra Christmas Concert

by Hadley Billman and Lizzy Tietjen

Ten songs total, such a good performance! It started out with the Eighth Graders with 4 spectacular songs. First they played an advanced piece called “Symphony No. 16” by Franz Joseph Haydn and  ‘For the Star of County Down’, by Debora Baker Monday. They finished off their performance with 2 christmas songs: “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Christmas Festival.” They played both songs with lots of Christmas Spirit and did an AMAZING job.

After the Eighth Graders great performance, the Freshman took the stage with 6 extraordinary songs. They started off with “Overture to Lucio Silla” by Mozart and then played an energetic fiddle piece,“Mountain Chase” By: Alan Lee Silva. “The Idylls of Pegasus” was next by Richard Meyer and was definitely a favorite. Can’t have a Christmas without some Christmas songs, so they finished out the concert with three. First, they played “Troika” (a three horse open sleigh) by Sergei Prokofiev and then “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)” by Paul Jennings. They finished it off with “Christmas Festival” by Richard Dickson and played it great!

freshman boys basketball

The Freshman boys basketball team played Bonneville this Saturday. They started off strong and fast pushing the ball up the court and playing some tough defense. This quickly put them on top and helped to increase the lead. Madison was soon winning by a lot and in the 2nd quarter got everyone on the bench in the game as well. They also killed it and kept racking up the points. By the end of the first half the Bobcats were winning by quite a lot.
The 2nd half started off by Madison draining some threes. This was awesome and the lead was increasing. By the end of the third quarter Bonneville had lost all hope. A few minutes into the fourth the boys were winning by 30 points so the mercy rule was put in effect which means that the clock doesn't stop for dead balls anymore. The final score was 66-36.

On December 7th, 2022 the sophomores, juniors, and seniors put on a splendid concert. The Concert Orchestra (sophomores) performed 4 songs and they were all spectacular. They played their songs wonderfully. The Symphony Orchestra (juniors, seniors) played 5 songs. They all played well. I think the crowd favorite was Sleigh Ride. The Symphony Orchestra is amazing. It was a wonderful concert.

The Concert Orchestra played 4 songs. The first song they played was “Finale from Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter” by Mozart/Gruselle. The second song they played was “Veni, Veni” by Longfield/Davis. The third song they played was “Pat-a-pan” by Davis/Longfield. The last song the Concert Orchestra played was “It’s Christmastime” by Custer.
The Symphony Orchestra played 5 songs. The first one they played was “Bacchanale'' from “Samson and Delilah” by Saint-Saens/Hansen. The second one they played was “Overture from “Messiah” by Handel. The third one they played was “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24” by O’Neill and Kinkel/Phillips. The fourth and crowd favorite song they played was “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson. The last song of the night was “Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson. It was a great performance.

Christmas Classic (Ballroom)

By: Caleb Broadbent

Christmas classic is a ballroom dance competition. There are tons of couples that compete in lots of events. At this competition couples competed in syllabus and opens. Syllabus is when two people dance with each other dressed as everyone else. They also are restricted what type of moves they can do when they compete. Opens is when two people dance with each other in any type of costume. In opens you can do anything except for lifts. You are not allowed to lift the girls. That would be called cabaret. There are lots of different styles of dance that couples competed in on saturday. It was fun to watch. There were seniors, juniors, and pre-teens. It was a hard competition to win in.

Cheer Competition

By: Taylee Stock
Madison is a very very sports invested school. We focus a lot on the students and their interests and many of us believe it or not, love Cheer; and yes, Cheer is a sport. On Saturday, December 3rd, the 7th and 8th grade Cheer Team and the Freshman Team drove almost an hour and a half to Pocatello high school for the Idaho Cheer and Dance Classic Competition. The 7th and 8th grade team won 2nd in show and the freshman team won 1st in both pom and show. First was our show routines. The 7th and 8th grade team went first and unfortunately during maybe 3/4ths of the routine the music played for a few seconds when it wasn't supposed to and they didn't restart it so the moves were off count. This was really really unfortunate for the girls but other than that it was an amazing routine. Madison freshman went last for the show routines and everything went smoothly, only one stunt did not hit but we brought it straight back up. Freshman went very last for the pom routines but everything looked great there and we had almost no problems. Go support your cheerleaders!! Here are some pictures from the event-

The Nutcracker

By:Brooke Wheeler
On Monday the 5th there was a ballet performance of The Nutcracker at the high school! There were so many great dances and all of the dancers were so talented! I definitely recommend you go and see this! It was entertaining and very fun! Here are a couple pictures of Britta Bjornn. She performed a beautiful solo and she is very very talented!

Freshmen Girls Basketball play Hillcrest 12/3/22

By: Camri Call
Picture
The knights came to play. But the bobcats came to play harder. Saturday's game started off but the refs were nowhere to be found. Everyone soon came to realize no one had assigned refs to this game and so they delayed our game until JV was over.
At 7:15 the game was underway. The Bobcats started off strong making it 9 to 1 in the first few minutes. Our girls kept up a steady pace and we continued building our lead. Torey Parker got a few steals to help out. Alyssa Clark hit a three pointer to further put Madison ahead. The score at halftime was 39-28.
The second half started out just as good as the first one. They hit a couple of quick shots right off the bat but so did Hillcrest. Madison kept pushing the ball and running the floor and Hillcrest got left behind. When the final buzzer sounded it was Madison: 51, Hillcrest: 32.

Teachers vs. Students and Talent Assembly

by daWaffler

Today we had the Teachers vs. Students assembly. We also had people come up and demonstrate their talents and that was amazing. We had some very talented people do some amazing things. The percussionists did an amazing musical number, and some of them were blindfolded. That is just blatantly amazing.

In between some of the acts there were competitions between the students and the teachers. The one after the percussionists was a 3 on 3 game of basketball. The students absolutely laid waste to the teachers in basketball. The next performance was done by the orchestra who played Riding the Rails. It was an amazing performance with very talented players. It honestly was one of the best musical performances I have ever heard. We had a great performance after this done by
Anya Hewitta who did flag twirling. It was a spectacular performance and was really beautiful and very impressive. It’s just a feat of coordination to do that, I mean I know I couldn't do that.

They had another competition called junk in the trunk. The teachers won that one. Good strategy Mr. Robbins! Then we had a song called A Million Dreams sung by
Hector Martinez and his daughter Addy. It was a beautiful song and they sounded really good. Everyone got really excited about their singing and so did I! Next we had Sullivan Carter who made balloon animals and cracked jokes. My favorite one was the flying snake. And then we had a musical number sung by Aiden Kunz and she sang “Dear Parents By: Tate Mcrae, she later said “That was the scariest thing I’ve ever done.” After that there is a dance done by the Bobcats. It was a nice dance and the coordination they had was impressive.

The next thing up was a game of tug of war. The teachers won that one, and if you ask me it was an absolute win. The students lost so fast it was a little sad. Next up some of the teachers and the special needs students put on a dance for the student body. Next up we had a song sung and played by Addi Baker and her cousin Lexi Driscoll. It was an amazing musical number and one that I would gladly listen to again. The final talent was a song on the piano played by Logan Redd. It was You’ll Be Back from Hamiltion and it was amazing. I loved every minute of it. He was a really talented performer. Then we wrapped up the assembly with a dodgeball game. The students one that one leading to a tie between the teachers and the students. All in all it was a great assembly.

School Bond Passes

By: Madison Rundown Staff

Voters in Madison County narrowly passed a bond on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, that will enable the school district to make several updates. The school district needed 66.67% to vote in favor and they ended up with 67.07% voting in favor, making it barely enough to pass. This meant that it only came down to about 9 votes that made all the difference! There are many updates that Madison School district plans to accomplish with this $25M bond money.
We sat down with Mr. Carlson, principal of Madison Junior High, and asked him many questions about this bond and what it would mean for the district. For the junior high specifically, the new updates will include nine new classrooms, an additional atrium in the cafeteria, and many other smaller updates. The smaller updates could possibly include a new gym floor, air conditioning in the gym, and better projectors/smart boards in the classrooms. Madison School District will also be building a new Hibbard Elementary School, and making the old one into a preschool so that Burton Elementary can have four classrooms back for K-4th grade.

Even though there were many people that voted in favor of this, there were also many people who voted against it because it would raise property taxes. When we asked Mr. Carlson if he was worried about it affecting his taxes as a homeowner, he stated that even though it will raise taxes a small amount, he feels that it will be worth it and will benefit the students. He stated, “I am excited for the opportunities it will provide for our students.”

Some people are confused on why we need a bond, but really it is a necessity. We are getting such rapid growth in Rexburg lately. Mr. Carlson said that every year they get at least 100 new kids enrolling in the Madison School District. If you were to come to Madison Junior High during lunch, you would see so many kids sitting on the floor in the hallways and almost every classroom has the max amount of kids that it can have in one class. Also, Hibbard Elementary is becoming too small for all the kids that go there. There is a new subdivision being built that will add many new students. Burton Elementary is also over crowded. They already had to make a computer lab into a classroom because there weren't enough classrooms for all the kids.

The Madison School District is going to try to start building right after school ends this year. Their first priority is building the new Hibbard Elementary School. After that, they are going to work on the addition to Madison Junior High School. They hope to have everything done by the Fall of 2023.
