High School Cross Country Team Gets 1st Place 9/28

by Emma Fisher

The high school Cross Country team had a race in Salmon on September 28. For this race, the runners had to run up a mountain. It was extremely steep and gravely. For part of the course it was so narrow it was barely wide enough for one person. On one side the mountain steeped upward and on the other side there was a cliff. It was so narrow that you couldn’t even pass people. Victoria Ribeiro, 9th grader, said, “It was awful and scary.” This course was definitely very challenging and terrifying.

Madison won both races! Liam Godfrey got 2nd, Daxton Webb got 3rd, Jacob Fisher got 6th, Mckay Manner got 7th, Carter Thomas got 9th, Kyler Brooks got 11th, and Cody Burt got 13th. For the Madison girls, Bryn Gwilliam got 1st, Millie Drake got 3rd, Ellie Dixon got 7th, Emma Fisher got 8th, Anya Kay got 11th, and Ester Moldenhauer got 14th. Great job everyone!

High School Country Team Competes in Star Valley 9/16

by Emma Fisher

The high school cross country team had a Cross Country meet in Star Valley, Wyoming on Friday, September 16. The girls ran at 10:00 am and the guys ran at 10:30 am. Both races were a 5K, which is about 3.1 miles. They ran against 2 teams from Utah, 2 teams from Idaho, and a team from Wyoming. There were a total of 6 teams.

It was cold and rainy for the whole meet. Within minutes, everyone was soaked and cold. Not only was the weather bad, but the course had several steep hills. Running downhill when the grass is soaked and slippery in the rain is pretty scary because some runners slipped and almost slid down the hill.

Even though it was raining the whole time and everyone got drenched, it was still fun and definitely memorable for many reasons. It was absolutely beautiful there. There was fog in the forest up in the mountains, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

The girls ended up getting 3rd place. Brynlee Gwilliam, 10th grader, got 3rd place. Millie Drake, 9th grader, got 8th place. Liam Godfrey got 3rd and Daxton Webb got 9th. Well done!

High School Cross Country Runs at the Tiger/Grizz Invitational

By: Emma Fisher

The Madison High School Cross Country team had a meet Friday, September 9 at Freeman Park. It is called the Tiger/Grizz Invitational. It is a popular race and teams come from all over the state to compete.

High school cross country athletes have to run a 5K for their races, which is approximately 3.1 miles. This takes lots of endurance. Not only is the race long, but the athletes run it very fast. It is a constant battle for the athletes as they run to not give in to their brain and slow down. Cross country is very competitive and mentally tough.

There are two 9th grade guys on the high school team. Both of them pushed themselves in their race. This was a difficult course because of the hills, but everyone ran it well. The 9th grade girls also did awesome.

There were 14 to 20  teams (depending on the race) and 1,166 athletes!

The high school Cross Country team had a race in Logan, Utah on Saturday, September 3rd. They ran at the Utah State course. The race was a 5K (about 3.1 miles). The athletes ran on many surfaces, including grass, gravel, and dirt. It was a good course. We got 2nd place (out of 9 teams) in 3 of the 4 races! Great job bobcats!

There are eight 9th graders on the High School team. Victoria Ribeiro, 9th grader, was nearing the end of the race. She kicked it in and finished strong. She passed at least 2 or 3 people in the last 150 meters! She said, ”At the last 100 meters of the race I felt happy to be done, and my legs felt like they were going to fall off.”
